The challenge

Northwind's ops team made decisions on data that was up to 24 hours stale, pieced together from a nightly CSV export and a wall of spreadsheets. They needed a single live view of fleet status, warehouse throughput, and SLA risk — without ripping out the systems already feeding those numbers.

Our approach

  1. 1Mapped the existing data sources and built a thin ingestion layer that streamed events into TimescaleDB instead of replacing the source systems.
  2. 2Designed a role-aware dashboard with live tiles, drill-downs, and SLA-risk alerts, pushed over WebSockets with a Redis fan-out.
  3. 3Hardened the read path with caching and back-pressure so a spike in events never degraded the live view.

The result

  • Ops decisions moved from next-day to real time, with SLA-risk shipments flagged before they breached.
  • The nightly spreadsheet process was retired entirely.
  • A single dashboard now serves dispatch, warehouse, and management with role-scoped views.
